Cameco Supports Diagnostic Imaging at Northumberland Hills Hospital with $200,000 Gift

COBOURG, Ontario, Canada (April 4, 2023) – Cameco has pledged a $200,000 gift to Northumberland Hills Hospital (NHH) Foundation to support the equipment needs of the Diagnostic Imaging Department.

Cameco president and CEO Tim Gitzel was in Cobourg today to tour NHH’s Diagnostic Imaging Department and attend a cheque presentation with both Susan Walsh, president and CEO of NHH, and Rhonda Cunningham, CEO of NHH Foundation. During the tour, Gitzel also had the opportunity to interact with frontline staff, who provided details on the services and care offered by the diagnostic imaging team.

“Northumberland Hills Hospital plays a vital role in helping to keep the community healthy and we are thankful to everyone here for their outstanding work and dedication,” said Gitzel. “We know our gift will help the hospital access the latest diagnostic imaging technologies and benefit the patients who come here for exceptional care.”

Over the next two years, NHH plans to replace both the Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Computed Tomography (CT) scanner. Advanced technologies will bring cutting-edge benefits to support the frontline team in meeting increasing needs and better caring for the community. Cameco’s donation has been pledged in support of these projects.

“Our current CT and MRI were state-of-the-art when they were installed more than 13 years ago, however technology for both has significantly advanced,” commented Dr. Paul Marrocco, chief of radiology at NHH.

“Recently, researchers and developers of CT technology have introduced something called photon counting, and this advancement is one of the most significant changes to CT I’ve seen in my 40-year career,” shared fellow radiologist and CT medical director, Dr. Frank Marrocco. “Now is the time for us to act – to become one of the first in our province to offer this advanced service.”

“An investment in a new CT and MRI will bring this leading-edge technology and the benefits it offers to Northumberland patients,” continued Dr. Paul Marrocco. “For those requiring CT, this will improve spatial resolution and provide better visualization to support faster and more accurate diagnosis and treatment plans, and those requiring MRI will benefit from a reduction in scan time and an increase in patient comfort.”

“Cameco has been a leading supporter of our hospital for more than 20 years,” said Cunningham. “This gift is yet another way Cameco is demonstrating its commitment to bettering our community and supporting healthcare locally – we are very grateful for their support.”

Cameco’s donation will ultimately support NHH Foundation’s Exceptional Community, Exceptional Care campaign, which includes the replacement of both the MRI and CT as one of its key goals. Set to be the largest campaign in the hospital’s history, its success will support world-class care and medical technology in Northumberland County and help the hospital prepare for the needs ahead brought on by a growing and aging community.
