Port Hope Conversion Facility Applies for New Operating Licence

Port Hope, March 16, 2016

Cameco's Port Hope conversion facility has applied for a new operating licence from the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC). The current five-year licence expires on February 28, 2017.

Based on strong operating performance, improved safety performance and significant reductions in uranium emissions over the current licence term, Cameco will be seeking a 10 year licence. Similar length licence terms are already in place for most other uranium mines, mills and processing facilities licensed by the CNSC.

Over the upcoming licence period, implementation of the Vision in Motion project will be completed. The project involves the removal of a number of old and under-utilized buildings, upgrades to other buildings, removal of contaminated soil, vacating the Centre Pier, moving the fenceline away from the Port Hope harbour and other elements.

The relicensing process is lengthy and work is already well underway to prepare the documents required to ensure that interested stakeholders, including the CNSC and the public, have all the information required to confirm that Cameco will continue to operate the facility safely and protect the environment.

A public hearing, where interested parties can participate, is currently scheduled for November 2016 in Port Hope. More information will be provided by the CNSC and Cameco in the coming months.

Documentation supporting the relicensing application will be posted on this website throughout the year, with the first series of documents scheduled to be posted by the end of June.
